DEPARTMENT
OF PARKS AND WILDLIFE — LAND FOR WILDLIFE
297. Mr C.J. TALLENTIRE to the
Minister for Environment:
I have a supplementary question. Why is the minister seeking
to kill off a highly successful voluntary conservation program that currently
has 2 043 members, and many more who are queuing up to have their properties
certificated as Land for Wildlife properties, bearing in mind that it covers
250 000 hectares of freehold land and over 900 000 hectares of leasehold land?
The minister is making a serious mistake killing this program off; why is he
doing it?

I reiterate that we are not killing off the Land for Wildlife
program. It will continue.
Mr C.J. Tallentire :
Yes, you are. You are putting more staff off.
Mr A.P. JACOB : No,
there are staff still managing Land for Wildlife.
Mr C.J. Tallentire interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Gosnells, I call you to order for the first time. Let the minister
answer the question.
Mr A.P. JACOB : The
Land for Wildlife program will continue, and it will continue to be staffed
within the Department of Parks and Wildlife. The member for Gosnells touched on
the very key point of that program, which is that it has been a voluntary
program up to this point, and I believe that in the future a community
partnership model, coupled with those resources that still sit with the
Department of Parks and Wildlife or this program, will be the best way for it
to continue into the future.
