I thank the member for some notice of this question. I have had the question for a while and the Government responded immediately. I am advised that the former occupants of the police residence have been relocated while the noise situation is being resolved. The operators of the Meekatharra power station, Western Power Corporation, have lodged an application for variation to the assigned noise levels from relating to noise emissions from this and other regional power stations under regulation 17 of the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997. I am advised that the Environmental Protection Authority considered the application on 16 March 2000. Further information has been sought from Western Power before a final decision is made. Western power has advised that it is planned that the Meekatharra power station will be replaced with a station that will comply with the noise levels normally assigned by the regulations by the end of 2001. The Office of Energy advises that the tender process is well advanced and the commissioning of the power station should occur on schedule.
