The Department of Education holds
enrolment
data for all schools in Western Australia, but holds student
attendance
data only for public schools.
Enrolment and attendance numbers will always be different.
Enrolment is the number enrolled at the time of the student census and includes Kindergarten to Year 12.
Attendance is for students enrolled at any time during Semester 1 and includes only the compulsory years of schooling, Pre-primary to Year 12.
In regard to student attendance, the Department of Education does not use an "at education risk" classification.
Student attendance is reported by "attendance risk" categories.
These categories are unique to Western Australian public schools.

Students are as at the annual Semester 2 student census because validated student birthdates are not collected in the annual Semester 1 student census.
Age is as at 1 July.
Changes to the school starting age from 2001 created a
half cohort, which progressed from Year 6 in 2008 to Year 12 in 2014.
S
tudents aged 12 years as at 1 July were across Years 7 and 8 in 2009 and earlier, but were almost exclusively in Year 7 from 2010.
