SPOILBANK MARINA —
PORT HEDLAND
728. Mr K.J.J. MICHEL to the Premier:
I
refer to the McGowan Labor government's investment in job-creating
infrastructure in regional Western Australia that drives the economy and
supports local business. Can the Premier update the house on how this
government is working with the local community to build the long-awaited Port
Hedland Spoilbank Marina, which was promised to the community but never
delivered?

I thank the member for Pilbara for
the question. Before I talk about the Spoilbank Marina, I want to quote from The
West Australian newspaper, about the most influential people in Karratha.
The member for Pilbara is one of those people. I want to quote what it has to
say about him —
Anyone who has spoken to Mr Michel
can be in no doubt —
Mr D.T. Redman : Brendon
Grylls is on there as well.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Your
favourite person —
Mr D.T. Redman interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Warren–Blackwood, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I think I probably
like Brendon Grylls more than you do. I quote —
Anyone who has spoken to Mr Michel
can be in no doubt about his passion for the region, where he has lived for 18
years, and is securing a bigger share of rich rewards for locals.
Mr D.T. Redman interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Warren–Blackwood, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The Spoilbank
Marina is a project that will drive economic activity in Port Hedland and,
indeed, diversify the Port Hedland economy. It will become a landmark
attraction for residents and tourists alike, revitalise the port foreshore,
provide a boost to local businesses, and create jobs throughout the Pilbara.
The detailed design and costings are underway, to be completed in December.
Construction is set to get underway in the middle of next year. The member for Pilbara
is chairing the community reference group. Feedback from that group will result
in a doubling of the original size of the boat launching facility, and include
a four-lane boat ramp. We have had strong interest in boat pen registrations,
with 20 registrations already. This project was committed to by the former
government in 2012, but nothing was done about it—another broken
promise by the previous Liberal–National government—so we are
getting on and delivering this important project for Port Hedland and for the
Pilbara, after years of delays. I would like to thank the member for Pilbara
for his excellent work in making this project happen.
