BHP BILLITON IRON ORE — WORKPLACE INJURY
(1) Is the minister aware of today’s report that yet another worker has been injured on a BHP Billiton Iron Ore work site in the north west? (2) If yes to (1), what details of the incident can the minister share with the house, and what action is being taken regarding this incident? (3) Is the minister aware that a spokesperson for the minister is reported as saying that the incident may not be serious enough to warrant a prohibition notice? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for the question. I thank the member also for advising me this afternoon, before the house sat, that this incident had occurred. I had been at a meeting, and my office had not provided me with the information. (1)-(2) I inform the member that the following information was provided by BHP Billiton Iron Ore to my office today — We can confirm there has been an incident on site in the South Yard at Nelson point this morning. The individual was treated on site and has been taken to hospital for observation. At this stage his injuries appear minor. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is treating the incident very seriously and a full investigation team has been mobilised and will travel to Nelson Point today to begin a thorough investigation. All yard activity at Nelson Point has been suspended. I have been provided with advice from the Department of Mines and Petroleum that a DMP inspector will arrive on site tomorrow morning, and we will then know the full details of the incident. The worker involved has gone home from hospital, so it seems that his injuries are minor. (3) I have not spoken to anybody in my office about a comment. My understanding is that BHP has in fact put in place a prohibition notice on that particular site. Indeed, its advice to me is that work has stopped at that site, which is what is required until an investigation is undertaken into the cause of the incident.
