WESTERN POWER — POWER POLE INSPECTIONS
I refer to Western Power’s program to inspect regional power poles by helicopter. (1) How many power poles were inspected in 2007–08, 2008–09 and 2009–10, and at what cost? (2) How was high-resolution infra-red and corona data information gathered during these inspections, and how was it incorporated into Western Power’s pole records and maintenance programs? (3) Are these inspections continuing in 2010–11; and, if so, how many poles will be inspected, what data will be collected and at what budgeted cost? (4) If not, why not? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Routine helicopter patrols—not pole base inspections—are conducted to track obvious defects and problems along high-voltage transmission lines on both poles and towers. Western Power has completed 60 country transmission lines twice a year for each of the above years. The cost per financial year is approximately $650 000. (2) No infra-red or corona camera is involved in these inspections, only high resolution digital cameras to capture images of faults. (3) Yes; helicopter patrols continue this year over 60 country transmission lines. The cost is outlined above. (4) Not applicable.
