DEPUTY PREMIER — PORTFOLIO RESPONSIBILITIES
211. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Why is it okay for the
Premier's Minister for Health to admit to it being a nine-to-five job
and why is the Premier the only one who is blind to the fact that this minister
is cruising to retirement?

Health, in my view, is probably the most difficult portfolio,
probably along with Treasury. I can sense a bit of movement there! In terms of
the financial side, the clinical side, the complexity of commonwealth–state
relationships and the complexity of disease and different specialities, health
is extraordinarily complex, and no health minister, and certainly not a
successful one, like the current one, works nine to five. If the Leader of the
Opposition believes that, he shows a lack of understanding of what is required
in government.
