TEACHERS — rent reductions IN REGIONAL AREAS
I refer to the government’s election commitment to reduce rental costs for teachers in regional and rural areas and to the answers given by the minister representing the Minister for Education on 31 March and 14 May 2009. Given that the aim of this election commitment was to attract and retain teachers in regional and rural areas — (1) Was it projected that there would be only a 12.5 per cent rise in teacher retention in regional and rural areas after three years? (2) Is it correct that only 30 per cent of teachers serving in regional or rural areas do so for four years or longer, based on the length of tenancy information provided in the previous answer? (3) What would be the cost in 2013 if 100 per cent of teachers serving in regional and rural areas had done so continuously for over three years? (4) What are the eligibility criteria for the $30.65 million currently being spent in rental subsidies and what are the number and location of teachers receiving the subsidy? Hon PETER COLLIER
