QuestionView source ↗
I refer to a report on ABC television news last night that staff of the member for Bunbury used his electorate office to make plans for strike action in the event that war was declared on Iraq. (1) Can the Premier confirm this report; and, if so, does he condone the use of electorate office resources for such blatant political purposes? (2) Will the Premier instigate a full investigation into this matter, including the extent to which the member for Bunbury was involved, and provide a report to Parliament? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) The Leader of the Opposition needs to put a little perspective into the comments that he is making on day-to-day politics. The comments made yesterday about the poster from the National Union of Students and his question today indicate that he is losing touch a little bit with the realities of our society. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Members! Dr G.I. GALLOP: If a complaint is made about what goes on in an electorate office, it will be dealt with in a proper way in the system. I thought that I saw the member for Bunbury on television last night indicating publicly that he had said to a member of his staff that it would not be appropriate to publicise through his electorate office a particular group that was not associated with his electorate office. I am confident that the member for Bunbury has handled this issue very well. I find it interesting that the Leader of the Opposition would raise this issue about electorate offices. Does the member for Mitchell promote through his electorate office the causes of any organisations outside the rubric of his local activities as a member? Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan: The day that you answer a question of mine properly, I will answer a question you put to me. Dr G.I. GALLOP: I ask the member for Kalgoorlie - the businessman of Kalgoorlie - if any activities related to his business in Kalgoorlie are conducted through his electorate office? Can he guarantee to this Parliament that no activities related to his business are conducted through his electorate office? Mr M.J. Birney: You are a grub. Dr G.I. GALLOP: There we go! That is an answer to the question. Everyone in this House knows the rules that apply to electorate offices. Everyone in this House also knows that in the application of the rules there are sometimes grey areas. The member for Bunbury has made it clear that the publicising of an organisation through his office was inappropriate. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Member for Warren-Blackwood! Member for Hillarys! Dr G.I. GALLOP: He responded exactly as he should as a local member of Parliament. If the Leader of the Opposition wants to go down that particular path, we are quite happy to have a look at all the activities that go on in the electorate offices of members opposite. The Leader of the Opposition is losing perspective on the big issues that face us as a State. The question that he posed today is an indication of that. The failure of the member for Mitchell and the failure of the member for Kalgoorlie to answer simple questions about the way in which their electorate offices operate indicate that people in glass houses should not throw stones.

Dr G.I. GALLOP replied: (1)-(2) The Leader of the Opposition needs to put a little perspective into the comments that he is making on day-to-day politics.
