(1) Has any research been conducted
in the past four years into garfish stock in Cockburn Sound?
(2) If yes to (1), will the minister
please table it?
(3) If no to (2), why not?
(4) Is the
Department of Fisheries aware of an apparent decline in garfish in Cockburn
Sound, as reported by people who fish there?
(5) If yes to (4), does the
department have any suggestions for what has caused the decline?

Fisheries, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The
Department of Fisheries advises —
(1) Yes, the department has recently
undertaken a stock assessment of southern garfish in Cockburn Sound.
(2)–(5) The
department's annual ''Status reports of the fisheries and
aquatic resources of Western Australia 2014/15'' provides information
about the outcomes of the assessment and the status of southern garfish in
Cockburn Sound—refer to page 72. Specifically, the ''Status
reports of the fisheries and aquatic resources of Western Australia 2014/15''
reports that there has been a decline in the stock and cites fishing pressure
and environmental conditions including, but not limited to, seagrass decline
and unsuitable water temperatures, as factors contributing to the decline.
