(1) Most public sector employees, including teachers, already have various entitlements to paid and unpaid leave for defence force training. As a result of recent federal legislation that came into effect in April 2001, some changes to public sector awards and industrial agreements may need to be considered in consultation with relevant unions as significant changes to conditions of employment for volunteer members of the Australian Defence Force Reserves are implemented over the next 12 months. (2) Approximately 20 teachers applied for defence force training during the past year.
