My question relates to the Western Power substation on lot 15 on the corner of Read Street and Safety Bay Road in Warnbro-Waikiki. I asked the minister a question on 21 June 2005 relating to the proposed Western Power substation on lot 15, Read Street, and was told that Western Power was working with the local community to investigate alternative sites in the Waikiki area. Local residents informed me last week that Western Power has proceeded with its plan and had begun laying cables to the original location. Can the minister inform Parliament whether Western Power identified any alternative sites in the Waikiki area; if so, will the minister name the locations and inform Parliament of any serious consultation with local residents who have concerns about the Safety Bay site being close to homes? I thank Hon Barbara Scott for providing some notice of the question. First, no; the work referred to by Hon Barbara Scott is for an electricity supply to a new Water Corporation pump station. This work commenced in July 2005 and is not related to the substation at Waikiki. Second, yes, of the four alternative sites identified, one is at the corner of Read Street and Safety Bay Road, and three are east of Ennis Avenue - that is, one north of Safety Bay Road and two to its south. Third, a consultant acting on behalf of the education department undertook a letter drop to residents in the vicinity of the preferred site - that is, the corner of Read Street and Safety Bay Road - in April 2005 advising that a display of the project was to be available to the public at the Safety Bay Library. This display was available from 26 April until Saturday, 30 April 2005, and Western Power officers were present on 28 April and 30 April to answer questions from concerned members of the public. This was a joint presentation between Western Power and the Department of Education and Training to explain the proposed use of the land, as it was no longer to be a high school. Public meetings were also held with members of the Warnbro Residents Association on 14 June 2005 and with the Waikiki Residents Association on 18 June 2005 and again on 9 July 2005.
