I refer the Minister to a letter sent to her by the Derby Chamber of Commerce relating to the development of a port at Black Rocks in King Sound, and ask -
(1) Has the Government given consideration to the issues raised in the letter?
(2) If so, what action does the Government propose to take in respect to the development of a port at Black Rocks?
(3) Are the conclusions reached by the Australian Port Consultants in its report of February 1983 still valid?
(4) If not, why not?

The current proposal to extend the existing wharf at Broome Port, to which the State Government has committed $6.5 million, is concerned with providing additional berth capacity to handle growth in existing trades and usage of the Port. Current port activity at Broome involves mainly oil and gas exploration in the Browse Basin, live cattle exports, fishing, pearling, and tourism industries and petroleum imports and exports. The report compiled by Australian Port Consultancies, GHD-Dwyer in 1983 was concerned with a concept involving the development of an extensive industrial and port complex at Black Rock to process and handle major new trades, such as bauxite, alumina, refined petroleum, iron ore, coal and mineral concentrates. The extension of the wharf at Broome Port would not exclude the development of a major port and industrial complex at Black Rock or elsewhere in the Kimberley should that be required in the future.
