WORKING WITH CHILDREN
CHECKS — BREACHES
982. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
Given the significant issues identified by the Auditor General, will the
Premier join the opposition in forming a bipartisan parliamentary committee to
look at the shortcomings identified in the working with children check?

AnswerView source ↗

The government, through the
Department of Communities, is examining this issue on whether there can be
improvements in the system. Bear in mind that before working with children checks
were brought in by the last Labor government, there was nothing. It is a significant
step up on what was there before 2006, but, obviously, improvements need to be
made. The government will examine it and see whether we can make improvements.
I think there has been a failure of process on the part of an association. I think
it acknowledged that. I am not going to condemn or point fingers at people, but
there has obviously been a failure. I would like to see that improved. The
government will examine the legislation to see what other improvements can be
made.
