I refer to information provided by a constituent that Wescobee Ltd is seeking approval from the Department of Agriculture for a protocol to introduce untreated honey from overseas and interstate. (1) Can the minister confirm that such an application has been lodged with the department; and, if so, when was it lodged? (2) What were the details of the application and who has been consulted? (3) Are any protocols currently in place in this State pertaining to the introduction of untreated honey from interstate and overseas? (4) Has any research been carried out on the possible or likely impacts of bringing untreated honey into Western Australia, particularly with regard to contamination of existing bee stocks, impacts on organic growers and impacts on markets? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank Hon Dee Margetts for some notice of the question. (1) Yes, I can; on 22 January 2002. (2) Wescobee Ltd has made a request to introduce untreated honey under quarantine restrictions that would require it to be treated under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture. The bee industry currently is being consulted on that matter. These views will be considered at the next meeting of the bee industry consultative committee. The department will then make a decision based on industry views and the results of the completed risk assessment. (3) Western Australia’s quarantine protocols prohibit entry into the State of untreated honey from overseas or from interstate. (4) A risk assessment is being conducted that demonstrates that the disease risks associated with the protocol can be well managed under the proposed quarantine and treatment protocol. The impact on local beekeepers and markets will be considered in consultation with the industry.
