I refer to the 2016-17 Budget Papers, Division 45, Commerce, Services and Key Efficiency Indicators, Industry and Technology , and I ask: (a) regarding the introductory text, " Industry and Technology Contributes to the State’s economy by promoting industry and technology." Can the Minister please advise: (i) what projects are currently afoot in relation to “supporting industry development through research and infrastructure”; (ii) what projects are currently afoot in relation to “promoting Western Australian industry opportunities and capabilities"; and (iii) what projects are currently afoot in relation to “providing policy development advice”; and (b) in relation to “providing policy development advice”, what has been the response to the Western Australian Technology and Industry Advisory Council’s innovation focus report?

(a) (i) (ii) (iii) I am pleased to advise on the activities being undertaken by the Industry Development Directorate with respect to “supporting industry development through research and infrastructure”; “promoting Western Australian industry opportunities and capabilities”; and “providing policy development advice”.  The Department of Commerce will:
o continue to engage with the Commonwealth Government and other relevant stakeholders for the Offshore Patrol Vessels Program to optimise Western Australian involvement; o in collaboration with the Western Australia Defence Industry Council, promote and market local defence industry capabilities to relevant Commonwealth departments and international defence project bidders; o continue to engage with DCNS, the preferred international designer for the Future Submarine project, to optimise Western Australian involvement; o develop infrastructure planning to optimise Western Australian involvement in current and future naval shipbuilding programs; o in partnership with industry and the Commonwealth Government, continue to establish mobile telecommunications infrastructure; o support the establishment and operations of National Energy Resources Australia (formerly known as Australia the Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Growth Centre); o co-ordinate the Western Australian Industry and Export Awards; o implement the Industry Facilitation and Support Program; o in partnership with the Department of Finance (State Supply Commission), review the State Government’s Buy Local Policy; o review the Building Local Industry Policy; o develop biodiscovery legislation; o continue to support the Western Australian Technology and Industry Advisory Council; o facilitate industry support programs and grants pursuant to the Industry and Technology Development Act 1998; and, o continue to collaborate with the Office of Science and the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) and provide support where appropriate.
(b) The advice has been provided to the State Government, in addition to the OGCIO, to be considered with other representations such as through the recent Innovation Summit.
