SWAN VALLEY CENTRE
Given the success of my appeal of the original freedom of information response, and subsequent access to a copy of the report on the organisational review following bullying allegations at the Swan Valley Centre - (1) Have all staff been provided with a copy of the report, plus the summary recommendations matrix? (2) How many voluntary and involuntary beds were open at the Swan Valley Centre as at 1 August 2007? (3) Is it difficult to recruit and retain mental health staff at the Swan Valley Centre? (4) If yes, is this difficulty contributing to the closure of beds at the Swan Valley Centre? (5) For how many weeks over the past 12 months have all 25 beds at the Swan Valley Centre been open? (6) Can the minister confirm that the Swan Valley Centre mental health clinic has closed its books for any new admissions? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The summary recommendations are available for all staff in written form. A number of staff forums on the report recommendations have been held, capturing every nursing shift. Staff on leave will be picked up in future sessions. (2) From 1 August 2007, nine open beds and six secure beds, to a total of 15 beds, were open at the Swan Valley Centre. (3) In the context of a statewide shortage of mental health nurses, it is difficult to recruit staff at the Swan Valley Centre. Recruitment has resulted in the ability to reopen three more non-secure beds at the SVC from 20 August 2007. (4) There is a direct relationship between the closure of beds at the SVC and the recruitment of mental health nurses. (5) Over the past 12 months, all beds have been operational at the SVC for a total of 20 weeks. (6) Yes. The SVC is an inpatient unit only. It has not closed its books for admissions. It is open for admissions 24 hours a day.
