(1) The Department for Child Protection is the lead agency representing Western Australia on the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Officials Working Group. The COAG Officials Working Group has been working with the Commonwealth Government since September 2009 to develop the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children 2010-2022. The Western Australia WA) Government's State Strategic Plan for Family and Domestic Violence 2009-2013 will be aligned to the National Plan to ensure that we work in close partnership with the Commonwealth and other jurisdictions to reduce violence against women and their children.
(2) The WA Government's State Strategic Plan for Family and Domestic Violence 2009-2013 identifies a number of strategies that have been designed to reform the State's response to family and domestic violence, and four Annual Action Plans will be developed to support the Strategic Plan. The Annual Action Plans will present the key focus areas for each twelve month period. The Annual Action Plan 2010-2011 will be released at the end of June 2010. A key focus of this Plan will be further integrating the State's response to family and domestic violence. The State Strategic Plan and associated Action Plans will be aligned with the National Plan, and WA will be required to report against outcomes of the State Strategic Plan to the Commonwealth.
(3) The National Plan will include a specific outcome area dedicated to improving the safety of Aboriginal women and their children. To support the National Plan, a number of initiatives will be included in the State's Annual Action Plan that have a particular focus on Aboriginal women in regional and remote areas of the State.
(4) The Department for Child Protection has been working with a Senior Officers' Group with representatives across relevant State and Commonwealth Government Departments and the Women's Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services Inc. to develop the State Strategic Plan for Family and Domestic Violence 2009-2013 and to inform the development of the National Plan. The Women's Council is the peak body for women's refuges and family and domestic violence services throughout the State. The Women's Council also represent the views of women and children experiencing family and domestic violence.
(5) More than 2,000 people have been consulted in the development of the National Plan, and in excess of 100 submissions were received throughout Australia, including from rural and remote areas of Western Australia. In addition, a Violence Against Women Advisory Group has been established to represent the views of women across Australia. Ms Vicki Hovane and Ms Dorinda Cox, both Aboriginal women, are Western Australia's representatives on this Group.
