I would like to acknowledge the
members for Wanneroo, Kingsley, Ocean Reef and Joondalup for the important work
that they have done in facilitating this significant transport infrastructure
project. I am very pleased to say that today work commenced on the extension of
the Mitchell Freeway northbound through to Hester Avenue. The commencement of
this $242 million project that was originally planned to be completed by 2020
has been brought forward. Although construction was meant to start in another
six to nine months, it has been brought forward at the request of the
contractors.
Mr
W.J. Johnston interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cannington, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : I think I heard someone in the background say something about
the Mandurah rail line, something that failed to meet —
Mr
W.J. Johnston interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cannington!
Mr
D.C. NALDER : Let me remind members that the Mandurah rail line failed to
meet the time frames, it was delivered late, it kept getting delayed, it was
way over budget, let alone failing to go into Rockingham and getting to
Mandurah and forgetting important infrastructure such as feeder buses.
Mr
W.J. Johnston interjected.

Mr
D.C. NALDER : Let me get back to the extension of the Mitchell Freeway
through to Hester Avenue. The contractors approached the state government and
requested to bring this work forward, providing a discount to the state if they
could on the basis that they are so far in front on the Gateway WA project out
near the electorates of the members for Forrestfield and Belmont and that it
would save 100 to 150 jobs. We happily allowed that to occur. It is now on a
time frame to be completed by early 2017. This project will get cars off
community roads and onto major thoroughfares. We are looking at the throughput
of traffic. This project is in addition to the Butler train station that we
delivered for $220 million, which was $20 million under budget and ahead of
time. We are really looking after the northern suburbs and allowing that area
to continue to grow well into the future.
