I refer to reported claims by the WA Police Union that regional police officers are struggling with an antiquated and unreliable communications system. (1) Is it the case that there have been 70 major breakdowns in the country radio network in the past 12 months; and, if it is not the case, how many breakdowns have occurred? (2) Is it the case that the current technology is 25 years old? (3) Given a reported estimation that police would need about $100 million over the next five years to replace the regional network, what funding has been allocated for this purpose? (4) What interim measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of regional and remote police officers and their communities who depend on an efficient communications system for backup and advice?
