(a)-(b)  Shortly after the administration of the Animal Welfare Act 2002 (the Act) was transferred to the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) on 1 July 2011, the legislative process for regulating these Standards was initiated.
Changes to the Act to allow regulations such as those relating to land transport of livestock will be made as part of the review of the Act recommended by the 2015 Review of Animal Welfare.
As an interim measure, DAFWA is proposing to prescribe the Australian Government’s Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines Land Transport of Livestock in Schedule 1 of the Animal Welfare (General) Regulations and have them in place prior to the end of 2016.
