QuestionView source ↗

I refer to the allocation of approximately $1 million to improving the skills of employees in Western Australia -
(1) Of this $1 million to be divided amongst a wide range of industries, has the mining industry been allocated only 20,000 Student Contact Hours?
(2) If yes, why is there so little money allocated to the mining industry in this tender?
(3) Are you aware of the Telfer project that requires 150 personnel for performing electrical services at the Telfer site?
(4) Are you aware that this tender does not provide enough money to train these workers?
(5) Will more money be made available to accommodate the training needs of West Australian workers for this project?

In addition to the Skilling WA program, the Department of Education and Training has allocated approximately $16.5 million in 2004 for metals and mining training to the TAFE Colleges and another $2.5 million through the Competitive Allocation of Training program. (2) Not applicable. (3) Yes. (4) The Skilling WA program is not intended to provide all the training funding required for a particular project. (5) Adequate levels of funding for the mining industry have been made available by Skilling WA and the other funding sources mentioned. Additional funding specifically for the Telfer project will not be made available.
