I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1) Yes, the
existing Western Australian suicide prevention strategy is continuing in 2014–15
with an additional $3 million investment. An evaluation of community action
plans by Edith Cowan University is currently being finalised to identify
strengths and areas for improvement. The Ministerial Council for Suicide
Prevention is overseeing an overall independent evaluation in 2014. The
evaluation findings will inform the next strategy, which will be developed by
the end of 2014 for consideration in the 2015–16 budget process.
(2) Yes; I table a copy.
[See paper 1639.]
(3) Not applicable.
(4)–(5)
Funding of $3 million in 2014–15 has been allocated, of which $1 million
will deliver community grants of up to $10 000 to strengthen the sustainability
of locally owned suicide prevention initiatives. Evidence-based mental health
and suicide prevention training will be rolled out across Western Australia for
around 600 people in local communities and strategic partnerships with the West
Australian Football Commission and the Netball WA will promote universal
suicide prevention awareness. An amount of $2 million will consolidate and
increase capacity of the response to self-harm and suicides in schools, which
includes additional specialist staff to support young people at risk.
