HELMS FOREST BLOCK — LOGGING
(1) What logging is planned for Helms forest block in the Shire of Nannup up to and including 2012? (2) What assessment has been made regarding the impact of this logging on — (a) Carnaby’s black cockatoos; (b) Baudin’s black cockatoos; (c) Red-tailed cockatoos; and (d) the activities and requirements of the nearby black cockatoo rehabilitation centre? I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) Parts of Helms forest block have been listed on the three-year harvest plan by the Department of Environment and Conservation. (2) (a)–(c) The forest management plan 2004–13 and associated manuals and guidelines detail the measures to be taken to manage the impact of timber harvesting on the flora and fauna of the south west forests, including these three species of black cockatoo. The Forest Products Commission conducts its harvesting operations in accordance with the requirements of the forest management plan. (d) The FPC will communicate with adjoining landowners or other parties if and when more detailed harvest planning commences. (3) Detailed research is undertaken by DEC into the management requirements of threatened fauna.
