FEDERAL ELECTION —
LABOR PARTY POLICY
402. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. If
the Premier does not support Bill Shorten's policies, which he stated
the day after Labor's federal election loss, why did he sell them so
hard to the people and Parliament of Western Australia?

Again, the Leader of the Opposition
misrepresents me.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Mr Speaker —
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition!
Mr M. McGOWAN : Mr Speaker,
it was —
Dr M.D. Nahan : Where's
the bus?
The SPEAKER : You might be on
a bus soon, Leader of the Opposition!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, I call you to order for the first time. Minister for Transport, I call
you to order for the first time. I was on my feet.
Mr M. McGOWAN : As odd as the
member for Riverton is, at least he had the courage to take on the role of
Leader of the Opposition. The member for Scarborough, Liza Harvey, the member
for Bateman, Dean Nalder, and the member for Churchlands, Sean L'Estrange,
did not have the courage to take on the role. Each of them had the opportunity,
as they know, and they did not have the courage to do it. I know a thing or two
about —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! This
will be a short question time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I know a thing
or two about how hard it is to be the Leader of the Opposition—I did it
for five years. It is a long, arduous and
difficult task. At least the member for Riverton had the courage to become the Leader
of the Opposition. Those who sit around him undermine him. They are letting him
go through the difficult period before they take the position away from him. If
that were not the case, they would have given him a glowing endorsement.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, I have warned you so many times. I call you to order for the second
time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : They refuse
to give the member for Riverton an endorsement.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, I call you to order for the third time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : My government—I
will talk about this shortly—achieved a credit rating upgrade last
week. We have created 44 000 jobs since being in office. We have increased the
price of electricity and water at half the rate the Liberal Party did in its
first three years in office.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, there
is no discipline over here. The manager of opposition business is making most
of the noise. How about listening to the answer to the question that has been
asked.
Mr M. McGOWAN : We are the
only state government with debt heading down. The Liberal Party's
record in office is frankly appalling. The Liberal Party and the
Nationals WA need to apologise to the people of Western Australia for the state
in which they left this state.
