I refer to wet line licences on Western Australian lobster fishing vessels. (1) Does the government intend to remove the current wet line entitlements? (2) If so, will the government compensate for the loss of these wet line licenses? (3) If compensation is given, is it intended to have an independent tribunal to determine the amount of compensation? Hon JON FORD

I thank Hon Murray Criddle for the question. (1) Whilst I have not yet made a final decision, access to the wet line fishery under the new managements will be limited to those fishers who demonstrate that they are dedicated wet line fishers by meeting a yet to be determined minimum catch criteria. (2) Any compensation is likely to be limited to fishers who can demonstrate a history of genuine wet line fishing but who do not meet the minimum catch criteria. (3) As required by the Fisheries Adjustment Schemes Act, I will receive advice from a panel when determining who the government should assist. I am happy to organise the Department of Fisheries to brief the member, or any other member, on any issue involving the wet line review.
