CORONAVIRUS — REGIONAL BUSINESSES AND
TOURISM — GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE
175. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Premier:
Now that commonsense has prevailed and the government has
abandoned the $5 million #DoitinWA campaign, will the Premier now redirect
funds from that program to help regional small businesses and tourism operators
that are doing it tough from the impacts of COVID-19?

Obviously, when we were
first advised about the travel bans from China back on 1 February, we moved to
take action to support the Western Australian tourism industry, which we
believed, at the time, was going to be the most dramatically impacted by what had occurred following the travel bans. We
then moved, I think with the endorsement of the opposition and the
Nationals WA, to put in place a major tourism campaign. As I recall, the member
indicated that he supported that campaign. We moved to put in place a tourism
campaign for Western Australia. Clearly, the events of the last week have
rendered that campaign no longer necessary, so we have suspended that campaign.
We will do a great deal more for businesses and to support the community across
the state. What we have done already has been well received across the Western Australia
community and our stimulus package has been significant, both for the city and
for regional Western Australia. When it comes to tourism marketing, cheaper
airfares and all those things, we are going to need to preserve resources, so
that when this crisis passes, we will be able to put in place a very
significant campaign to get that industry back on its feet.
