GERALDTON JUVENILE REMAND CENTRE
Given the minister’s commitment to involve the community in the decision to develop a juvenile remand centre in Geraldton and given the community’s overwhelming rejection of sites suggested by the Department of Corrective Services so far - (1) Will the minister give an assurance that none of the rejected sites will be pursued? (2) If another site has been identified, will the Geraldton community have an opportunity to have input prior to a final decision? Hon JON FORD

I thank Hon Murray Criddle for some notice of the question. The Minister for Corrective Services has supplied the following answer - (1)-(2) On 30 May, the Minister for Corrective Services announced the start of a four-week public comment period for the mid-west and Gascoyne community to provide feedback on the short-listed sites for the proposed Geraldton juvenile remand centre. The Geraldton community was promised that significant community consultation would be undertaken before the government made a final decision. The minister will be meeting with the community reference group on Monday, 18 September and does not intend to pre-empt the discussion. The member and the community can be assured that the government has fulfilled its commitment to full and open community consultation and that their submissions have been seriously considered.
