STATE ECONOMY —
MORTGAGE STRESS
87. Mr D.C. NALDER to the Premier:
I refer to ANZ data released today
that highlights Western Australia is by far the worst performing state for
mortgage delinquency. What does the Premier say to all the struggling Western Australian
home owners who are substantially behind on their mortgage repayments and
potentially going to lose their home?

AnswerView source ↗

The government is obviously focused
on the economy. We work every day to create jobs. As I just outlined to the
member, half the jobs created in this country in the first month of this year
were created in Western Australia. Ensuring that we have the opportunity for
employment and the opportunity for good jobs for Western Australians is very
important to ensuring that Western Australians can deal with any mortgage
issues they might face. We have also expanded the availability of assistance
for people who might be suffering from financial hardship, with financial
counsellors and hardship utility grants and the like; we have improved the
arrangements around that assistance. We are
doing what we can to deal with these issues around Western Australia. Whilst
opposition members would like us to blow the budget—I can hear
that in everything they say—we are committed and continue to be committed
to good financial management.
