HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
In view of recent estimates regarding hotel accommodation in Western Australia, can the minister outline to the house the latest hotel development opportunities in this state? Ms S.M. McHALE

I thank the member for Perth for his question. A couple of weeks ago I reported to the house that there were some very positive signs that occupancy in the hotel industry was up, demand was strong and room rates were growing and that these were all very good conditions and ripe for investment. Perth is certainly experiencing unprecedented growth and expansion in the hotel industry. At the moment demand is outstripping supply. I can report to the house that the latest tourism accommodation register, which is compiled by Tourism WA, shows that nearly $1.4 billion of tourism accommodation is being planned throughout the state. This is a massive $41 million more than the same time last year. There are 86 projects in the planning phase. If they all materialise—some of them will not—an extra 5 000 rooms will be available, which will boost tourism and the economic growth of our state. There are currently 48 projects worth about $434 million under construction. Once completed, they will provide 1 500 new rooms in Perth and Western Australia. In addition to these projects, 30 projects were completed during 2008, creating over 1 200 rooms. It is really important to understand that by increasing hotel accommodation throughout the state we are seeing significant investment in the state. There are 32 projects in the pipeline in the south west, coral coast tourism has nearly $74 million worth of projects in the pipeline, and the golden outback tourism region has nearly $45 million worth of projects in the pipeline. If all the projects are completed, nearly $1.4 billion worth of projects will be constructed over the coming years. As Minister for Tourism, I have been working very hard to attract further investors of international reputation to see our fantastic state and its hotel industry as a strong investment opportunity. This really demonstrates our government’s commitment to growing tourism opportunities and tourism spend within Western Australia.
