Shire of East Pilbara—Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements—Aboriginal
communities
808. Hon Neil Thomson to
the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs:
I note this question
was written on 14 October, so I have to acknowledge its timeliness.
I acknowledge the
important and special role of Aboriginal people in the Pilbara, highlighted at
celebrations at Parliament this week.
(1) Is the minister aware that there has been no
commitment from the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements for Western
Australia (DRFAWA) to the Shire of East Pilbara to repair roads into some of
the remotest and most disadvantaged Aboriginal communities, seven months after Cyclone
Zelia?
(2) Has the minister visited Aboriginal
communities affected by the cyclone?
(3) If no to (2), why not?
(4) Will the minister undertake to include an
urgent item for the Aboriginal Affairs Coordinating Committee to ensure that commitments
are given to the shire to enable urgent repairs to be undertaken and facilitate
improved conditions at those communities?

was actually 18 September, so the answer is current as at that date.
(1) This question would be better placed with the
Minister for Emergency Services.
(2) No.
(3) The minister is awaiting advice on an
appropriate time to visit.
(4) The Aboriginal Affairs Coordinating Committee
is not a forum that is able to make such a commitment.
