Cannabis—Alcohol use disorder treatment
31. Hon Dr Brian Walker to the p arliamentary secretary representing the Minister for
Health :
I draw the minister's
attention to a trial undertaken by doctors at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in
Sydney, the results of which were published earlier this month, suggesting that
CBD—the non-psychoactive component of cannabis—has potential
when treating alcohol use disorder. I note that this was a hospital rather than
academic trial funded by the Sydney Local Health District.
(1) Are any of our state hospitals here in Western
Australia managing trials in relation to cannabis, and, if so, can the minister
provide a list of both the hospitals and the scope of the trials being undertaken?
(2) Is the Western Australian Department of
Health, through any of its local health authorities, funding any hospital-based
trials, either in relation to cannabis or to any other potential new treatment,
and, if yes, can the minister provide details?
(3) If no to either (1) or (2), is there a reason
that this type of funding can apply in other jurisdictions but not here in
Western Australia?
