REMOTE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES - GOVERNANCE
(1) Will local government be expected to meet the extra cost of governance in remote indigenous communities? (2) If yes to (1), what governance in addition to what they do at present will local authorities be asked to undertake? (3) Has the Western Australian Local Government Association been consulted? Hon JON FORD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) I have had nothing before me on specific governance issues of remote communities. Of course, it depends on the definition of a remote community. The member might be talking about a specific Aboriginal or indigenous remote community. Communities such as Jigalong are formed under different acts and combinations of acts. Nothing has been put in front of me that looks specifically at local government taking up that role, although I constantly get complaints from remote communities that they do not get a fair deal out of local government. However, when one looks at the issues, one finds that they are much more complex than that. The response from local government is that it depends on the situation. I have not seen anything specific, but I am happy to sit down and talk to WALGA about those issues. As they arise, we will deal with them, but there is no policy of this government to pass that responsibility on to local government.
