ROTTNEST ISLAND —
ASSET MANAGEMENT
847. Ms L. METTAM to the Premier:
I
have a supplementary question. Given the series of inconsistencies of
information coming from the Rottnest Island Authority chairman and a clear
reluctance to review all infrastructure, will the Premier support the
establishment of a parliamentary select committee to review the situation
rather than having the authority board review itself?
Mr M. McGowan : I didn't
hear the last few words. I didn't hear your last sentence.
Ms L. METTAM : Given the
series of inconsistencies of information coming from the Rottnest Island
Authority chairman and a reluctance to review all infrastructure, will the
Premier support the establishment of a parliamentary select committee to review
the situation rather than having the authority board review one section and
review itself?

Honestly! Your negativity is
something to behold! I have got here a copy —

The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : It is just
incredible. You do not listen to the answers you are given. On 26 October 2018,
a statement by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions
states —
Rottnest Island Authority launches
inquiry into Army Jetty Incident

an independent expert inquiry led by
professional services firm KPMG.
''We have engaged KPMG to
conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matters that contributed to this
event,''
Ms L. Mettam : That's
just the Army jetty.
Mr M. McGOWAN : That is what
it says.
The SPEAKER : Member for Vasse!
Mr M. McGOWAN : Instead of
having an independent inquiry, you want to have a political witch-hunt. That is
essentially what your plan is here. Let us have a political witch-hunt into
something!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members on my
left.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Be careful
about that, because it might find that over those eight years, the former
government spent no money on it, and its tourism minister is now the Deputy
Leader of the Opposition. That is what you might find.
Dr M.D. Nahan : They
might find that you're culpable.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Seriously! The Leader of the Opposition's
performance lately has been below his normal standards, and that is saying
something!
There is an independent inquiry into
the matter, not some political witch-hunt.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I just draw
attention to the fact that whilst the former government received that report in
2010, it managed to spend nearly $2 million upgrading the golf course at
Rottnest so the quokkas could eat it, because the then minister liked going
over there and playing golf. So $2 million was spent on the golf course. The
Liberal Party is only —

The SPEAKER : Premier.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The Liberal
Party's only recent contribution to Rottnest Island has been to have a punch-up
at the hotel and create a spectacle of itself.
