BUNBURY PORT — CONTAINER SHIPPING SERVICE
901. Hon ALANNA CLOHESY to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
I am asking this question on behalf
of Hon Adele Farina, who is away from the chamber on urgent parliamentary
business.
I refer to the Bunbury Port
Authority Portal issue 14 of June
2010, which states that regular container ship visits to Bunbury port were
likely to commence later that year and that the containers would be handled at
the outer harbour as an interim facility.
(1) Will the
minister explain why container shipping from Bunbury port did not proceed as
stated in the June 2010 issue of the Portal ?
(2) Since 2010 has a regular
container shipping service been established at Bunbury port?
(3) What action
has the Liberal–National government taken to establish a container
shipping service at Bunbury port?
(4) What are the reasons for the
failure to establish a regular container shipping service at Bunbury port?

On behalf of the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Transport, I thank the member for some
notice of the question, which she asked on behalf of the other honourable
member.
(1) The 2010
statement initiative was related to a particular port user initiative that did
not eventuate.
(2) No.
(3) The Southern
Ports Authority has experience in containerised trade in one of its ports in
Esperance. In Bunbury, the Southern Ports Authority has facilitated initiatives
for supply chain providers—port users, logistic providers and shipping
companies—to explore containerised trade.
(4) Supplier
chain providers indicated that the economic viability of containerised trade
was the major reason for the difficulty in establishing containerised trade in
Bunbury.
