DISTRICT
HIGH SCHOOL FUNDING — HON MARTIN ALDRIDGE'S COMMENTS
473. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Minister for Regional Development:
I refer to statements by an
Agricultural Region member in the other place, Hon Martin Aldridge, who has
urged his National colleagues to continue to highlight, as stated in one of his
media statements on the National Party website —
cases of what appears to be a
shifting focus by Liberal Ministers to support metropolitan suburbs in
preference to our regional communities.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Members!
Mr
M. McGOWAN : I continue —
(1) Does the minister agree with Hon
Martin Aldridge; and, if not, why not?
(2) Will the minister commit to
standing up to his Liberal cabinet colleagues to restore the funding that Hon Martin
Aldridge is complaining about to district high schools in Boddington, Gingin,
Toodyay, Wyndham, York and Jurien Bay?

I thank the Leader of the Opposition
for the question.
(1)–(2) One of the great
things about being on this side of the house is that we can stand up for the
regions that we represent and provide really strong advocacy for the people we
represent. The rabble on the other side has no credibility in regional Western
Australia. The record of the Liberal–National government in respect of
regional development in Western Australia is outstanding and second to none. I
will always defend members of Parliament on this side of the house who are
prepared to stand up and represent the people of regional Western Australia.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Collie–Preston, I call you to order for the
first time.
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : If a member on the other side of the house were to break with
the very, very strict guidelines of the Labor Party caucus in respect of what
members can and cannot say, they would be hauled over the coals and probably
even kicked out of their seat; they would have to look out for the next
preselection that comes around the corner. The Leader of the Opposition has a
huge challenge, and that is to develop a sound policy position for regional
Western Australia. He is nowhere near it yet; he has a long way to go.
