PARKINSON’S DISEASE NURSE SPECIALISTS
The government has refused to increase funding for the Parkinson’s disease nurse specialists. In the past few years, $240 000 has been allocated for two nurses. They asked for an additional $190 000 so they could take the Parkinson’s nurse specialist service to the outer metropolitan areas as well as increase the service in the inner metropolitan area. Many people will be disadvantaged by that decision. (1) On what basis was the decision made? (2) Did the Department of Health conduct a cost-effective analysis of the service prior to making the decision; and, if it did not conduct a cost-effective analysis, will the minister ask the health department to conduct a cost-effective analysis of the service and then review this decision within a specified time frame? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(2) I understand that the Department of Health has just renewed the contract for the provision of Parkinson’s nurse specialist services for the next three years. The existing contract expires approximately in the middle of this year, and it has been renewed for that period. The member is asking why we have not given them more money on top of the existing service. I do not know the answer to that. If the member had given me some notice of the question, I could have found out the answer.
