Ms MacTiernan questions the Minister for State Development about the iron ore export capacity at the Port of Geraldton, given the delay in the Oakajee port project. The Minister firmly states that the export limit will remain at 12 million tonnes to protect the residents and environment of Geraldton, while Oakajee is developed.

PORT OF GERALDTON — IRON ORE EXPORTS CAP
As a supplementary question, is the minister aware that the companies in the area wish to export somewhere between 20 million and 24 million tonnes per annum before there is any prospect of Oakajee port being up and running; if so, what does he propose the companies do in the interim? Mr C.J. BARNETT

I make it very clear that they will not be exporting 24 million tonnes of iron ore through the port of Geraldton. We will not turn residential Geraldton into an iron ore port. That is a policy decision that reflects our respect for the people of Geraldton and the high environmental standards we will have in Geraldton and in the port. I know opposition members hate the reality that Oakajee will be built and they hate the reality that the Australian Prime Minister is supporting Oakajee. They will try as hard as they can to frustrate it, but I can assure them that it will be up to 12 million tonnes and it can continue at that rate. In the meantime Oakajee will proceed, and that will be the iron ore port for the mid-west.
