FEDERAL ELECTION —
LABOR PARTY POLICY
401. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
Given the Premier was the face of
Bill Shorten's election campaign in Western Australia, what
responsibility does he take for the election loss given the campaign in Western
Australia focused on his massive power price increases, his failure to deliver
jobs and WA's plummeting house prices?

I think this is the definition of
leading with your chin. The federal election was a few weeks ago. We all know
the result; it was disappointing for my federal colleagues, and it is true, I played
a role in attempting to assist my federal colleagues. Members might note that I
appeared in some of the material and on the side of a bus.
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : That is a statement
of fact!
The SPEAKER : Members!
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Contrary to
myself, like Austin Powers, the Leader of the Opposition was put into cryogenic
storage.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : They were
drilling; remember the scene?
Ms S. Winton interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Wanneroo, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : They drilled
in, trying to find his mojo, and they could not find anything!
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, you asked a question, wait for the answer.
Mr M. McGOWAN : It was a disappointing
result for Labor nationally, and no doubt there will be some soul searching and examination of what went wrong
across Australia. I look forward to Anthony Albanese, who I caught up
with yesterday, taking up the fight to the federal government. But I note, now
that the Leader of the Opposition raised these issues, that there has been some
discussion around political matters concerning the opposition. Today, the
deputy state Liberal leader, the member for Scarborough, said —
 it is the ''intention''
that Mike Nahan lead the party to the next State election.
I
note that the member for Churchlands, the shadow Minister for Health, when
asked about the leadership of Dr Nahan had this to say. I quote —
Mr L'Estrange
said Dr Nahan ''should'' be leader at the next State election.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! You
asked a question, I want to hear the answer.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I quote the
member for Churchlands.
Mr S.K. L'Estrange interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Churchlands, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I am happy to
quote him. He said —
''Mike is leader
he should be leader at the next election,''
That is the definition of
equivocation on the part of both of them. I say to the Liberal Party in Western
Australia: stop talking about yourselves.
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Stop talking
about yourselves! Stop focusing on yourselves and focus on the people of Western
Australia.
Ms L. Mettam interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Vasse!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Vasse, I call you to order for the first time. This is not a shouting match.
Mr M. McGOWAN : How about the
Leader of the Opposition and the pretenders sitting around him—you,
you, you and you—apologise —
Ms L. Mettam interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Vasse, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : — for
the $40 billion worth of debt they left us, the recession in which they left
this state and the incredible increases in electricity and power.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Vasse, you are on two.
