ELECTORAL ROLL — ENROLMENT
786. Hon KATE DOUST to the Minister for
Electoral Affairs:
The Western Australian Electoral
Commissioner, Mr David Kerslake , has identified a
massive enrolment discrepancy between state and federal electoral rolls. When
will the government legislate to implement direct enrolment and close the 115 000
voter gap between our state and federal electoral roll; and, if not, why not?

I thank the honourable member for
the question.
I am aware of this issue and these
are discussions that I have had with the honourable member herself. We will be
introducing a number for reforms to the Electoral Act, which will be
forthcoming. Ideally, I will read that in before the end of this year. That
will not include the direct enrolment; as the honourable member would know, we
are looking at the current situation at the federal level. Having said that, I
will foreshadow that that is certainly something that we are not adverse to and
there is potential that that may occur within the next 12 months, but I cannot
commit to it.
