Hon Klara Andric—Withdrawal of remark
615. Mr Basil Zempilas to
the Premier:
I refer to Hon Klara
Andric's offensive anti-Semitic remark in the other place yesterday.
(1) Has the Premier spoken with Hon Klara Andric
about her conduct?
(2) Given that Hon Klara Andric has not apologised
to Hon Simon Ehrenfeld, a Jewish member of Parliament, who was in the chair at
the time and was deeply offended by the remark, will she apologise?

the Premier:

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the
question. I want to make it clear to everyone that it is a privilege to be in
this place and the other place, and it is incumbent on us all to conduct
ourselves in a way that meets the expectations of the community. I think the
comments from Hon Klara Andric that were reported last night were inappropriate
and, of course, Hon Klara Andric did the right thing and withdrew and
apologised for her inappropriate and unparliamentary comment. She has also
apologised to Hon Nick Goiran. My understanding is that she apologised at the
earliest opportunity to the chamber and to the member. Hon Klara Andric regrets
her comments. Of course, I did speak with her last night to say that they were
inappropriate and unacceptable.
Her comments and her contrition,
of course, stands in sharp contrast to that of another member of Parliament who
was also brought to order during debate last night. The member not only did not
comply with the wishes of the Acting Speaker at the time and, in fact,
canvassed the ruling but also then left the chamber in what I think was a
highly disrespectful and inappropriate way.
Point of order
Mr Shane Love: Mr Speaker, I refer to your statement
at the start of proceedings today and the actions of the member for Central
Wheatbelt and ask whether that is acting contrary to what has occurred today in
the chamber?
The Speaker: I will not be upholding that point of
order. I would ask the Premier to keep his comments more directed to the
question from the Leader of the Opposition.
Questions without notice resumed
Mr Roger Cook: Thank you very much, Mr Speaker. Of
course, I did not mention the member for Central Wheatbelt, but I thank the
Leader of the Nationals WA for clarifying that particular point.
As I said, being in
this place is a privilege. How we conduct ourselves is important. We have to
reflect the standards of the community that we seek to represent. We have a
responsibility to treat each other with respect, to use parliamentary language
and to conduct ourselves in a way that makes the community proud. Obviously,
there were two instances last night that seemed to not meet that standard. I
fully accept that, and I think we have all taken an opportunity to reflect on
our own behaviour. This is a Parliament. It is sometimes subject to robust
debate; we all get that. But it is appropriate that we conduct ourselves with
respect and that we make the communities that we are here to represent proud of
our conduct.
