STOLEN VEHICLE RAPID RESPONSE INITIATIVE
97. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Attorney General representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the Minister for PoliceXXX ###XXXs
media statement of 7 December 2014 in relation to the use of global positioning
system trackers to reduce car theft. To date —
(a) how many vehicles have had the trackers installed;
(b) how many vehicle interceptions of cars fitted with the
trackers have occurred; and
(c) how many alleged car thieves have been charged as a
result of the use of the trackers?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(a) The stolen
vehicle rapid response initiative is managed by the National Motor Vehicle
Theft Reduction Council in partnership with Western Australia Police and the
Royal Automobile Club. The RAC is responsible for the installation of GPS
trackers under the SVRRI. It is understood that 314 vehicles have been fitted
with GPS trackers under phase 1.
