EDGEWATER TRAIN STATION —
MULTISTOREY CAR PARK
720. Hon ED DERMER to the minister representing the Minister
for Transport:
Mr President!
The PRESIDENT : I call the honourable member for Claremont—the
2012 premiers!
Hon Sue Ellery : You have just made his life!
Hon ED DERMER : You certainly have, Mr President! I was
very pleased that the North Metropolitan Region includes the suburb you refer
to.
Some notice of the question has been
given. I refer to the call for a multistorey car park at Edgewater train
station made by the Liberal candidate for Joondalup.
(1) What is the estimated cost to construct a multistorey car
park at Edgewater train station?
(2) Did the ''Directions
2031'' paper identify a multistorey car park as a priority for Edgewater
train station?
(3) Will the
Minister for Transport release any feasibility report that may have been
prepared for a multistorey car park at Edgewater train station; and, if not,
why not?
(4) If a
multistorey car park were to be constructed at Edgewater train station, would
patrons be charged to use it; and, if so, how much a day would they be charged?
(5) What
feasibility reports, if any, have been prepared for the construction of
multistorey car parks at other metropolitan train stations, and for which
stations have such reports been prepared?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question.
The Minister for Transport welcomes
the initiative of the Liberal candidate for Joondalup, who, like the Liberal–National
government, is committed to easing car parking pressure at train stations. The
member would be aware that only recently the Minister for Transport announced
that an election commitment to build 3 000 car bays has been exceeded. It is
also noted that a new train station to be built in Aubin Grove will provide 2 000
car bays, in comparison with an inadequate 900 offered by the opposition.
(1)–(5)
Reliable costs cannot be provided at this stage due to insufficient data.
Independent of the policies enunciated in ''Directions 2031'', a
preliminary consultancy report to review the viability of increasing car
parking capacity at Edgewater station was prepared for the Public Transport
Authority. As this was a preliminary consultancy report for the PTA, it forms
part of a deliberative process and would be inappropriate to table.
The member is encouraged to view the
''Directions 2031'' document—he will love it—for
firsthand information on projects he may be interested in.
