(1) Is the minister aware that the council of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has voted to oppose the Government’s electoral Bill? (2) If so, why is the minister ignoring the council’s views on this very important issue? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS
AnswerView source ↗
(1)-(2) I am aware that on 23 July a motion was put to the council by a failed Liberal Party candidate for the state seat of Kalgoorlie. In support of that motion, that failed Liberal Party candidate put before the council arrogant Liberal Party views based on a lack of democratic principle. Note was taken of that lack of democratic principle - Hon Peter Foss: What arrogance! Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS: - and of the arrogance of those who decided - Several members interjected. The PRESIDENT: Order, members! There seems to be an outbreak of interjecting. Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS: When it comes to arrogance, nobody can compete with Hon Peter Foss. I represent the interests of the people of the region, and they have a very strong democratic tradition of voting against the interests of the Liberal Party. That tradition is based on their longstanding practice of voting for the Labor Party and of supporting the best interests of the people of Western Australia. We in Western Australia have the people of the goldfields to thank for our being part of Australia. Those people believe in democracy; they do not believe in the Liberal Party’s sick rules.
