KURRA VILLAGE LEASE
927. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Minister for Lands:
I have a supplementary question. The
Premier said yesterday that the minister would sign the agreement based upon
the terms that he negotiated with BHP. Today the minister is saying that those
terms are unacceptable. How many beds will this camp have at the time the
agreement is signed?

I have had a number of meetings with
BHP, I have had a number of meetings with the Premier, and I have put my views
in writing to both. I highlight that in my assessment, now over 12 months ago,
I believed it was appropriate to have a work camp that was pitched to 600 beds.
In assessing it, that was more than enough to meet the operational needs of
BHP. If I was making the call today, I would probably say, ZZZ### ZZZClose the thing altogether'', because things have
changed considerably in the past 12 months. But I make the point that if I am
required to sign that, I will not sign it unless BHP comes back to me with a
600-bed work camp provision.
