I refer to the feasibility study into piping desalinated seawater from Esperance to Kalgoorlie-Boulder. (1) Will this feasibility study be based on the desalination plant’s use of renewable energy, or non-renewable energy only? (2) To what level of environmental assessment will the proposed pipeline be subject? (3) The company undertaking this study, United Utilities, has asked for further time to provide supplementary information. Could the minister outline what this supplementary information would specifically relate to in the study? Hon TOM STEPHENS

AnswerView source ↗

I provide this answer on behalf of the Minister for Government Enterprises. (1) The feasibility study was based on infrastructure costs that assumed the use of a non-renewable energy source. (2) As the Government has yet to make a decision on proceeding to further evaluation of the proposal, no consideration of the level of environmental assessment has yet been made. (3) United Utilities presented information relating to the pricing structures considered in the feasibility study. In addition, it re-emphasised certain elements of the study which it felt were important in the Government’s deliberation of this project.
