The Premier has repeatedly told the public and this Parliament that his Government has stopped logging and thus protected our old-growth forest. (1) How does the Premier account for 14 500 hectares of old-growth forest promised for protection being deleted by the Department of Conservation and Land Management’s remapping? (2) Will the Premier now admit that his conservation values are smoke and mirrors? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) I stand by the position that I put to the people of Western Australia in the promise taken to the last election. We used a definition of old-growth forest and applied that when we came to government. We said that we would set aside 99 per cent of the old-growth forest, and see whether we needed to take the remaining one per cent. We found that we could incorporate the one per cent in the policy framework. Therefore, 100 per cent of old-growth forest in Western Australia, as defined when we entered the election campaign, has been saved. That will mean that future generations of Western Australians will be able to enjoy that wonderful natural asset that is unique to Western Australia. That asset will be at risk should the Liberals ever get back into government.
