I refer to page seven of the November 2010 edition of
Prospect Magazine
which states in relationship to Anketell Port proposal, ‘The precinct will be funded by a private proponent, along with a proportion of social infrastructure costs, but will ultimately be managed and owned by the Dampier Port Authority’, and I ask -
(1) How does this differ from the proposal by the previous State Government for the development of Oakajee Port?
(2) Why does the Government believe it is necessary to invest $678 million of State and Commonwealth money in Oakajee Port, but is happy for private developers to construct the Anketell Port without Government money?

Department of State Development advises:
(1-2) The State and Commonwealth Governments have committed funding towards the common user port infrastructure at Oakajee to support the development of the resources sector in the Mid West and ensure the long-term prosperity of the region. This includes the establishment of a multi-user deepwater port, a world class industrial estate and an expanded transport network to mineral deposits in the region.
The Mid West resources industry is characterised by a number of small mining operators. Unlike other existing and proposed port developments (including iron ore ports in the Pilbara region), none of the companies or mining projects in the Mid West region are sufficiently large to justify the port in their own right.
It is common practice for Government to fund and own multi-user port infrastructure in the State.
