SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
1064. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I refer to article in The West
Australian of Wednesday, 18 September 2019 titled ''Big bucks theory
for teachers'', which outlines a plan by the state government to employ
trainee teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics pathways.
(1) What criteria
will these students be assessed against to determine their suitability to
become trainee STEM teachers?
(2) How many teachers does the
department intend to engage through this process?
(3) How will this program be
delivered in regional high schools?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The
proposed plan to employ science and maths graduates in secondary schools while
completing the second and final year of their Master of Teaching qualification
is in the initial planning stages. Preliminary discussions have been held with
the five Western Australian universities. When the proposal has been further
developed, I am happy to provide the member with a briefing or to update the
house more generally on the detail of the program.
