❓ A WA parliamentary question seeks information on course changes at the Great Southern Institute of Technology, specifically regarding reduced teaching hours and course abolishments. The Minister's response indicates that contact hours vary and are not systematically recorded, and that courses are removed due to lack of demand or being superseded, rather than being abolished.

(a) The student teaching contact hours for courses can vary due to a range of factors including the delivery mode, the specific needs of the student cohort enrolled in the course, and changes to national qualification structures.
The actual student teaching contact hours are determined as classes are formed and take these factors into account. Student teaching contact hours are not systematically recorded or reported and therefore cannot be compared from one year to the next.
The Great Southern Institute of Technology schedules student contact hours to ensure that students are able to successfully complete the course. There has been no systemic reduction to the student teaching contact hours for courses delivered in 2014.
(b) The Institute does not abolish courses, but regularly removes qualifications from its scope of delivery either because there is no longer industry demand for the qualification, or because the qualification has been superseded by a new Training Package qualification.
Twenty-nine qualifications have been removed from the Institute's scope of delivery since 1
st
January 2014. [See tabled paper no] for details of these.
